Mere survival is not enough.
It might be for a time. But if your goal is symbiotic relationships with the people that surround you in every environment, reverting to your brain’s base survival instincts is likely to cause friction that can further impede the harmony and balance you subconsciously desire.
Are you simply surviving, or are you experiencing a measure of success in how you move about in life? Would you like to? It’s important to understand that there is a difference – only then can you begin to make a change.
Survive: to act on instinct.
There are multiple brain types and personality styles, and the survival mechanisms of each will vary greatly. In my book, The Angry Brain, I detail the core survival beliefs of a brain with anger as its dominant emotion. For the purpose of this blog, we will focus on the angry brain, but remember that each of the four main brain types have their own unique survival and success planes. These survival beliefs are expressed in default behavioral patterns that many angry brain individuals portray:
- The angry brain believes that everything valuable in life lies outside of the self, and so must be taken.
- Beyond this, the angry believes that what it needs must not only be taken, but taken by force. Nothing they might desire will ever just “show up.” They need to make it happen.
- They judge the value of people by their usefulness to them and their goals.
Now how do these survival instincts play out in terms of behavior?
An individual that is following their default anger-based survival patterns may use fear and threats to control another person. They may not listen to the other person, only hearing what they want to hear or what they can use. An anger-focused brain stuck in survival mode might create problems where there are none in order to face upheaval and obstacles. They don’t know how to positively direct their psychic energy, and so may alienate the people around them that don’t share the same tendencies.
Thrive: to enjoy harmony in your daily environment.
While every brain emotion type has its own version of survival and success, the angry brain specifically has markers of potential that everyone who recognizes themselves as this brain type will find remarkable. When operating with a focus on success versus mere survival, the angry brain has the potential to:
- Seek innovative, creative solutions to problems with an unrelenting will that other brain types may not.
- You can be an engaging, inspiring leader that keeps positivity high even when facing obstacles.
- You are able to deal with problems head-on and forgive and forget, moving forward in relationships easily.
If you have an angry brain and find yourself identifying more with the survival descriptions than the successful ones, you likely A) do not yet have a full understanding of your brain type and what you need and B) require behavioral modification tips as well as environmental changes to help you be the best you can be.
Bridging the Gap: understanding, then modification.
Gaining a new level of introspective understanding will help you see yourself as you truly are. Once you identify the internal directives that dictate your behavior patterns, whether instinctive or learned, will enable you to enter the next stage: behavioral modification.
Once you accept that you are operating on a survival level, it’s easy to see why it’s essential to improve and move towards success. Survival often means subpar in terms of personal relationships, your professional career and your overall satisfaction with life. For the angry brain, given their nature and drive, it takes a consistent effort and analysis of internal thought processes and external actions. How can you direct your anger emotive brain towards positive end goals, enabling only harmony along the way?
In my book, we will explore the intricacies of the anger emotion and how it operates within and through angry brains.
